SECONDARY TEACHER or RELATED POSITION

I have completed 2˝ years of a 2 year GradEntry BEd degree (Secondary Maths/Science) at the University of Canberra (UC) with only one unit outstanding. As such, whilst I don't have the final unit for the award of a BEd, I believe that I now have the required experience, working with secondary school students, to enable me to work in a secondary school (or college) admin office, etc. My preferred schools would be in the Queanbeyan, Woden, Campbell, etc, area. I like helping kids learn and as such, and if weren't for my poor vision (refer to my Medical Declaration, below), would like to work as an "assistant" Maths teacher in years 7-10. Not "Special" Education.

For the record, my understanding of what an "assistant" teacher would do is to "support" the primary classroom teacher when students are working on exercises set by the teacher. While the teacher is teaching, the "assistant" teacher would be taking their own notes and "commence working" (so to speak) when the teacher tells the students to start working on the set tasks. The "assistant" teacher would refer the "more difficult" requests to the primary classroom teacher for their attention concentrating on the more straight forward problems allowing the primary teacher the time to assist those students who require the extra time.

I applied to return to UC for Semester 2 of 2008 but was declined as I had already failed my final Teaching Practicum on two previous occasions and under the rules of the University a student is only permitted two attempts at any given unit. I had been hoping to return and convert from "Maths/Science" to "Maths/Maths" in the hope of being able to teach Years 7-10 Maths.

Personally, I would like to see Universities "develop" a special "conditional" BEd degree which would be issued at the discretion of the Dean of a Faculty of Education or equivalent where Education is only one School or Department of a larger Faculty, on the advice of the student's course coordinator, etc, so that the student can use their acquired skills as an "assistant" teacher. Discretion would considered for those students who may have passed all "campus based" units but failed the final "external" practicum on two occasions. Just a wishful thought.

As indicated above, I am unapologetic in being politically aligned. As such, I would expect to be excused from attending any assembly, morning or afternoon tea or luncheon which was to be attended by an MP (PM, Minister, Local Member, or Back Bencher) who was from any Party other than the one (or ones, if a Coalition) which I support and, on election day, would hand out how to vote cards for.

[Universities already have Pass Degrees (BSc, BEd, BA, etc) and Honours Degrees (BSc(Hon), BEd(Hon), BA(Hon), etc) so why not a "Conditional" Degree for those degrees which "lend" themselves to this concept, such as "BEd(Cond)"? The "Conditional" would indicate that the "practitioner" must be supervised when in an "applied" situation, such as a classroom.]

MEDICAL DECLARATION

(NB: See Abbreviations where necessary to explain any abbreviations used in this section.)

As of Thu, 05 Jan 2012 I have been on a Disability Support Pension (DSP) having, previous to that, been on Newstart Allowance, on and off, since late 2000. Under the DSP I am able to do voluntary work or voluntarily undertake part-time work for up to 12 hours per week.

My disability concerns my vision. I have been legally blind in my right eye since November 2008 when my ophthalmologist did an ultrasound on that eye after detecting an unexplanable drop in ocular pressure since the previous checkup. The ultrasound identified an inoperable detached retina in the right eye. I also have an apparently rare form of cataract on the right eye which it has been decided not to treat as it would do nothing for my vision in that eye due to the condition of the retina. I have been advised that the cataract on the right eye appears the way it does in the photos of it that I have due to the trauma of the retinal detachment.

Whilst the corrected distance vision, in my left eye, is fine my near vision is becoming more and more problematic, requiring additional magnification to aid general reading as well as computer use, neither of which can be sustained for long periods of time without the need for a break. There is also a cataract currently forming on this eye. I have, for some time now, had diplopia (double vision) in my good (left) eye but was only advised of the reason for this at my regular ophthalmic checkup of Mon, 01 Aug 2011. I am actually seeing one genuine image and two "ghost" images, rather than the one genuine and one ghost image as suggested by the classical definition. (Also see the Wikipedia page for diplopia.).

My condition is probably more correctly defined as follows:
triplopia [trip·lo·pi·a)
noun Ophthalmology
Condition in which a subject sees three images of a single object. This condition may be the result of
crystalline lens sclerosis, multiple pupils, etc.
[Millodot: Dictionary of Optometry and Visual Science, 7th edition. © 2009 Butterworth-Heinemann]

or probably even polyopia

As an interesting off shoot, I have a pair of Pentax "JUPITER" (9x20; 6.7°) binoculars (see images below). My primary TV is in my bedroom and my pillow is just on the minimum distance (ca 3.1m) from the TV screen to allow me to use my binoculars to enable me to read any text (eg weather reports, etc) and to make faces, etc, clearer. On my Vivo 40cm HDTV (LEDTV15HD | 16:9), I can see basically a 4:3 portion of the screen but much clearer than unaided.

AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT A 'COMFORT ZONE' IS

A dog is lying on a nail in the floor, making a soft hollow howling noise. A guest asks the owner: 'Why doesn't it (the dog) move?'. The dog's owner replies: 'It isn't hurting it (the dog) enough.'.
